8th and 9th slide: Min Wen

Everyone:
Good morning principal, teachers and fellow Teck Whyeans
We are from 2D.

Nissa:I am Nissa, this is Min Wen and do not forget Eric.
We are going to present our topic on propaganda.

Nissa: Hey Min Wen, do you know what is the meaning of “propaganda”?

Min Wen: Hmmm… I am not too sure myself…

Eric: I know a video that will tell us more details. Let’s sit back and watch the video.

VIDEO BEING PLAYED…
After watching…

Nissa: I see… Now I know the meaning!

Min Wen: Yah that’s right! How about all of you.. Did you all understand it?

Eric: well…Hope you guys understand the video. Now we are going to present to you about the power-point slides that we did.

Nissa:Hmm..How is propaganda used as a weapon during WWII?

Min Wen:I know! Propaganda can be used to change people’s mindsets or even (pause) brainwash them…

Nissa: Yes! I read that the Japanese used propaganda to show that they are a good ruler. No wonder our group wanted to find out more about this.

Eric: We chose this topic as the word “propaganda” caught our group’s attention. We did not understand the meaning of “PROPAGANDA” at first. After we discussed among ourselves, we felt it would be challenging for us.

Nissa: There was once when we did not make a plan when we wanted to visit the Bealieu house in Sembawang. As we did not find out more, one of our group-mates was warned by a policeman on patrol for taking photos in a restricted area. If we had done our research, we would have enough time to visit Ford Factory instead on the same day. This incident emphasized the need of planning or we would just waste our time and effort.

Eric: How did we solve these problems?

Min Wen: Some solutions given by our group members are we would set deadlines and remind each other to do their work in time. We would give each other reminder calls, smses and emails to make sure everyone is aware of the deadlines. When we visited Ford Factory the next day, we made sure we found out relevant information for filming to go smoothly.

Nissa: So what did we learn from this project?

Eric: We learnt from the wasted Sembawang trip to always plan things before doing. Not only the skill of planning can be applied in our studies, we can also apply it in the future, in our work. Planning is very important in our life. If we fail to plan, we plan to fail. This is crucial as it can determine how well we will do in our future.

Min Wen: This is the end of our presentation. Thanks for your attention.

Eric: Well… let’s ask some of them.
We go to some students to ask some questions.
Min Wen: Looks like you guys understand the video.
Now we are going to present some power point slides.
Nissa: How is propaganda use as a weapon? This is one main question. Well…Propaganda brainwashes people mind..
You guys might be thinking how, am I right?
Min Wen: Well…like the Japanese, they used propaganda to reflect that they are good ruler.
Nissa: Yah that’s right! Now, why did we choose this topic?
Eric: Well, we choose this topic as the word propaganda caught our group’s attention. We did not understand the meaning of “PROPAGANDA” at first. After we have discussed among ourselves, we felt it would be challenging for us.
Eric: Some problems we faced previously are, work being delay as group members do not help one another when they need help. We do not discuss with one another as we find it hard to communicate with each other.
Eric: How do we solve those problems?
Min Wen: Some solutions given by my group members are, we would set deadlines. We also remind them not to be lazy and be encouraging to explain things that they do not understand.
Min Wen: THE END… Thanks for your attention…

Eric: As you can see, the picture in the background is an example of propaganda. The word “Go ahead, please “TAKE DAY OFF!” means that if they work less , they are helping the enemies to win the war. I know this as the British is an example. They actually work less and end up losing to the Japanese. They even had a party before that as they were to complacent that they would win. Therefore, the Japanese were making strategies and working hard.So this propaganda is referring to the Japanese being proud that the British took their day off.

Eric :This news may be a form of propaganda too. As you have watched just now, Singaporeans will belief that they are well protected by the defenses like the cannons around the coast and the protection from the war ships like the prince of whales. But who knows, they are still defeated. The British make the Singapore in the war believe that the Singapore is invincible like a impregnable fortress, so when the Japanese struck the Singapore was totally unprepared.

Jie Cheng: You may wonder what the word propaganda means. Propaganda is an official government communications that is publisize to the public to influence people’s opinion and emotions towards the other party. Which is brain washing the viewer. The information shown is mostly biased or one-sided. The information is always purposely being spread to help or harm the other party. Propaganda can appear in many forms such as poster and videos.

Nissa(talk while the background is showing the cartoon): As what Jie Cheng said previously, propaganda appears in a form of Video too. One of them is cartoon propaganda. Let me show you one example. Blitz Wolf is an early anti-German World War II cartoon produced in 1942 and directed by Tex Avery. This is another version of the 3 little pigs where the evil wolf is represent by Adolf Hitler. In this cartoon the Wolf
The pigs are defending themselves from the wolf but the sign here says that no Japs allowed thus it shows tyat the wolf show the jap and german are both enermies of the amercans.
This scene shows the wolf in a makeshift tank and has to carry his tank sometimes. The wolf is also shown wearing a lace petticoat which is usually worn by females. Hence, the wolf is seen to be as weak, incompetent, and powerless against the more powerful and smarter americans.

Poster no 1
Min Wen: Let me share about this propaganda poster. This propaganda poster was published during WW2 by the Japanese and the message to the viewers is “welcome to my world” (point to the top) . This means that the japanese is welcoming the other countries to live with them. Each country is represented by children from different countries. The Japanese want people to know that they will bring harmony.

Script – Beheaded heads outside cathay building

Posted on August 18th, 2008 in Jie Cheng, discussions by eric2d  Tagged

Jie cheng: During ww2, looters like me would be beheaded by the Japanese if we rebelled against them. The Japanese did this to gain respect from the people and also to instill fear and terror in the people. The heads would then later be displayed outside the Cathay building. The purpose of this is to warn people not to commit crime and also not to go against the Japanese.
